Re: Effect of less sodium sulfite?

Were you able to print any of them? If so, how did they look? My guess is that they had slightly more graininess. Also, because these were made under controlled lighting the contrast was lower on the negative and the lack of 25 grams of ss was not an issue.

Re: Latent image fading

Greetings, Tim. I have never heard of latent image fading. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. What does exist is increased base fog that severely reduces sharpening. This is caused primarily by background radiation that is ever present, even in cold storage. In essence, background radiation from th...

Re: Wynn Bullock's Carbonate solution

There is a brief discussion of Perfection XR-1 in the new edition of the Film Developing Cookbook. The formula is proprietary so the exact formulation is not known, but we do give two patent formulas that are very close. It's in Chapter 10, page 128. We forgot to put it in the Index.

Re: divided developers

Thank you for this post. It's good information to have. We'll be looking forward to hearing your results using "more modern divided developer formulas."

Question: Has anyone else had similar results with divided developers and modern emulsion film?

Re: Developing film for scanning

I suggest underexposing by one stop to preserve maximum shadow detail for scanning, then compensating for the highlights with underdevelopment. The traditional two stops recommended for wet printing may work just as well. Try exposing a scene with one stop and two stop underexposure and seeing which...

Re: Developing film for scanning

Welcome to the club, Steve. The advice you have been given to create flat negatives with maximum information in both the shadows and highlights, and then pump contrast into them during scanning is good. Overexposure will provide good detail in the shadows, underdevelopment will help control the high...

Strange but true. The camera used by David Burnett was an Aero Liberator. I had never heard of an Aero Liberator before reading the article last night. Today John Minnicks friended me on Facebook. He is not a member of this forum and had not seen this post. Turns our he's the maker of the Aero Liber...

Large format camera at Historic Event

It takes a great deal of courage to show up to photograph a historic event with a large format film camera; especially when you're surrounded by digital photographers. David Burnett displays that courage. https://www.dpreview.com/articles/2937027624/photographer-david-burnett-at-today-s-impeachment-...

The Film Cookbook is alive and well and at the publisher. Bill and I hope this will carry film and darkroom well i...

Re: washing time with alkaline fixing

It's really quite simple. What you want is to wash the chemistry out of the emulsion. The uncoated back of the paper (RC or Fiber) will stick to whatever side it is against. So, if the emulsion is facing the back, the emulsion will stick to the back and washing cannot occur. However, if the emulsion...

Borax and Boric acid are not the same things. Borax is an alkali and in common grades is used in washing powder (20 Mule Team Borax). Boric acid is an ... acid. It is often used in roach poison. WARNING: Do not wash your clothes in boric acid! Keep out of reach of cockroaches. Boric acid is also use...

Hypo Clearing Agent (HCA) is nothing more than sodium sulfite. The formula in the DCB is Water at 125F/52C, 750.0 mol Sodium sulfite, 200.0 g *Sodium bisulfite, 50.0 g Water to make 1.0 liter *The sodium bisulfite lowers the pH in order to prevent softening of the film emulsion. Re: Thiourea toning problem.

Sodium carbonate is an alkali that works as an accelerator. Why don't you try adding that and see what happens? Second, Ilford uses a lot of hardener in their paper, far more than when many of these formulas were written. This came about as part of a three-way competition between Kodak, Agfa, and Il...
